enjoyable quilting class than one taken with international quilt teacher and
quilt, fabric designer, and creator and former Executive Editor of Quilter’s
Home magazine, Mark Lipinski. Dubbed “the bad boy of quilting,” by the
international press, Mark’s no holds barred, brutally honest, riotous PG-13

Simple Simon - By Mark Lipinski (that handsome devil!)
“If you only make one quilt in your lifetime, this super-fast and easy quilt is the one to make!”
Finished quilt top: 78 x 99 inches
Unfinished block: 11-inches square
Blocks: 48 Simple Simon blocks plus border
Why a Simple Simon?
There is just about no quilt that comes together faster than these
quick-to-piece Simple Simon blocks. The best part is that using this pattern’s
method of cutting and piecing you will learn ways to create up to 70 different
unique quilt designs using the two simple blocks! After taking the class, you’ll
be able to transform every quilt block that you come across in a book, magazine
or pattern into your very own creation! Frankly, you’ll never look at a quilt
block the same again! Plus, even a quilter without a whole lot of piecing
experience will be able to create a queen sized quilt in just about the same
amount of time as piecing a run-of-the-mill crib size quilt! That’s why the
Simple Simon is the perfect quilt to make to give to a friend or family member
as a token of your affection and good wishes.
Now don’t go looking online for a finished Simple Simon. I guess you can but
you’ll be defeating the purpose of the whole lesson. This is a class that will
challenge your creative spirit and teach you how to turn any hum drum, run of
the mill pattern into something unique and totally yours.
Simple Simon is so versatile and easy to make that there is no end to the
possibilities of color and style combinations. Whether you choose batiks, hand
dyes, brights, contemporary or traditional prints, 30’s, children’s patterns,
plaids, flannels, or a combination of the above, your Simple Simon is bound to
be a hit! Simple Simon is so easy that the novice quilter will quickly want to
make another. For the experienced quilter, Simple Simon is such a relaxing and
imaginative quilt to put together that it will be impossible to be satisfied
with only one!
Bring to class Supplies and Equipment
• Rotary Cutter
• Cutting Mat
• Wide Plastic Quilter’s Ruler (6”x24”)
• Pins (if you’re a “pinner” – ugh!)
• Sewing Machine, extension cord and/or power strip – in good working order and
student should know how to operate it
• 100% Cotton sewing machine thread in a neutral color
• A notebook and pen
• A digital camera is also helpful to capture all of the ideas!
Materials
• Fabric A: 2 ½ yards (block fabric)
• Fabric A (border): 1 ½ yards (optional outer border fabric – not needed in
class)
• Fabric B: 2 ½ yards (block fabric)
• Fabric C: 1 yard (inner border fabric not needed for class)
• Fabric D: 1 yard binding fabric (not needed in class)
• Fabric E: 6 yards backing fabric (not needed in class)
• Batting: Standard queen-size batting (needed as a design wall)
The Simple Simon works especially well with bold, large-sized prints – the
busier the better. Just remember that any combination can work well –
complimentary designs and colors or those fabric and color choices that might
even seem a little “too close for comfort,” and almost clash (just be sure that
the values are very different)! DON’T BE AFRAID OF WILD COLORS AND LARGE, YUMMY
PRINTS! THIS IS A QUILT YOU CANNOT SPOIL! LEAVE YOUR COMFORT CIRCLE, BABY, AND
HAVE SOME FUN (Look at it this way – you may get hit by a Mac truck after the
class and you would have missed your opportunity to let loose for once in your
life….).
One little hint: When choosing your fabrics try to be careful that
they’re not too close in tone and color – you want to be able to tell one fabric
from another from across a room. BE SURE THAT THE VALUE OF THE FABRICS ARE VERY
DISTINCT AND DO NOT BLEND INTO EACH OTHER SO THAT THEY LOOK LIKE ONE FABRIC WHEN
THEY ARE PUT NEXT TO EACH OTHER!
Quantities specified for 44/45”-wide, 100% cotton fabrics. All measurements
include a ¼” seam allowance. Sew with the right sides together unless otherwise
stated. You will have MORE than enough to play with. You might even consider NOT
buying your backing, binding and/or outer border fabric until AFTER the class!
If you have any questions or comments don’t be afraid to pick up your phone and
give me a ring (908-876-1208) or email me at
pickleroadstudio@aol.com. xoxom

Pineapple Picnic (Beginner to Advanced)
This is the perfect class to learn the tricky and difficult Pineapple block
using the
Option 12™ with the Square in a Square® Technique. As always with the Square in
a Square®, there are no ripping or sewing on paper templates, just nice sewn
seams on fabric strips. We will work on 3 blocks in class that can be the
beginning of large quilt or a complete table runner. Use a color scheme or go
wild and clean out your scrap box.
As an added bonus we will learn how to use various size strips to create a cool
and unusual twist on the Pineapple. Also you can see how using triangle and
diamond center units can really shake the ordinary Pineapple up.
Even if you have made the Pineapple before you will love this workshop. Fill you
brain with more ideas and concepts while becoming more familiar with the Square
in a Square® Technique. We will also cover important professional pressing
techniques, basic sewing techniques, speed piecing and rotary cutting tips for
professional looking blocks.

Diamonds by the Square
The ease and accuracy of the Square in a Square® system steps forward by
creating long thin triangle units. The beauty of these new units; from this
system are spectacular.
I just can’t say enough about how easy these new Options™ are. Options™ are
triangle units without triangle trouble. The Diamond Options™ create movement,
depth and dimension to your quilt designs. Using traditional methods, these
triangle units are very difficult to create….HOWEVER, the Square in a Square®
system makes them attainable for even the beginner.
In this lecture, you will learn how to cut and sew the four new Options™, use
the pattern adapting, read the charts and of course, see the beautiful quilts.

you think it would cost too much? Would you like to be able to personalize your
clothing and/or quilts? Are you looking for something different in fabrics? We

textiles. You can do this on natural or man made fabrics. There is no special
preparation required and can be done on new and previously washed fabric &
clothing
We have now prepared a class which will teach you to marble fabric & silk
screen. You will also learn how to use inks to color fabric and prevent
bleeding, techniques for creating your own border fabric, ways to expand your
stash and add colors missing from fabrics and so much more. You will no longer
be limited to using fabric off the rack.
Bring to class:

your hands. (Ink is water based and cleans up with soap & water)

unscented if possible, Dollar Store works best) plastic coffee stirrer from fast
food restaurant, popsicle stick or similar tool, small paint brushes, or any

bust, widen (or narrow) for the back, shorten or lengthen wherever needed, and
work in combinations without causing any distortion in the pattern.

YOUR personal shape.

Altering a “Not-So-Basic” Pattern
Ever had moments of pattern panic when faced with altering a “not-your-basic”
pattern? Take a deep breath, relax and think it through. All styles are designed
from a basic pattern. Learn how to look for the similarities so you know where
to begin.
Alteration principles will be presented that make the process simpler. Many
examples will be shown for several common alterations that are needed using
non-basic patterns such as an empire waist design with no darts that needs to be
altered for a prominent bust.
Or how about broad or narrow shoulder changes in popular raglan style sleeves.
Fun, Factual and Informative!
